Reading Football Club were formed in 1871 and turned professional in 1895. They were originally nicknamed the The Biscuitmen after Huntley & Palmers biscuits who's factory was based in Reading. However the nickname changed in the 1970s, when the factory closed, to "The Royals". Reading's original colours in 1871 were navy and white hooped shirts. These were replaced by royal blue and white hoops in the late 1930's, with wider hoops being introduced in 1948. In the 1950s, plain white shirts were briefly adopted until an all sky blue kit was introduced in the 1960s, In 1969 the traditional blue and white hoops returned. The crest is based upon the club colours, a crown and a lion which is a representation of Reading's most famous landmark, "The Forbury lion".
